1Dame Wendy Hall, Professor of Computer Science at University of Southampton; founder of Web Science
Dame Wendy Hall is founding director – along with Tim Berners-Lee, Nigel Shadbolt and Daniel J. Weitzner – of the Web Science Research Initiative, which was launched in 2006 as a long-term research collaboration between the University of Southampton and MIT.
She is a fellow of the BCS, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Engineering and Technology, and the Royal Society. She became a Dame Commander of the British Empire in the 2009 UK New Year’s Honours list. She was also awarded a CBE in June 2000.
This year, Wendy Hall was invited to join the Global Commission on Internet Governance, an international effort to determine how to keep the internet free and open to all. She also launched the Web Science Institute, a major research initiative to understand the effect the web has on society, culture and the economy. She also sits on numerous committees and advises various government bodies.
